Daily Dosage of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are unsaturated fatty acids. The human body cannot synthesise them on its own so they need to be obtained with the food. Therefore, they belong to the group of essential fatty acids. Next to its anti-inflammatory properties, they serve as vital component of human cell membranes.

The right proportion of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids

In the course of the last century, our dietary habits have changed drastically which often results in an imbalance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. The ideal 1:3 ratio has shifted to almost 1:20 nowadays. Thus, supplying the body with omega-3 fatty acids is crucial in order to restore the balance of the omega fatty acids.

Flaxseed oil is very rich in essential omega-3 fatty acids, especially in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). At the same time, it only contains little linoleic acid which belongs to group of omega-6 fatty acids. These properties make it ideal for levelling out the abovementioned imbalance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Only two teaspoons (at 3 g each) cover the daily requirement of 2 g ALA of an adult.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from marine micro-algae

The human body metabolises ALA for energy. Small amounts of it can also be converted to other essential omega-3 fatty acids, such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). However, the conversion rate is very low so that additional DHA is needed, for instance in the form of algae oil, fish or marine animals. At Ölmühle Solling, we offer a variety of omega DHA oils on the basis of flaxseed oil that we refine with oil from marine micro-algae.
Our flaxseed omega DHA oils are available with additional walnut, chia or sea buckthorn. The DHA stems from the micro-algae Schizochytrium sp. and helps maintain a normal heart function, vision and brain function. A daily intake of 250 mg DHA per day is sufficient to benefit from its positive effects. This corresponds to 16 g of oil, i.e. 2 tablespoons at 8 g. The recommended daily dosage should not be exceeded and a diviserfied and balanced diet as well as a healthy lifestyle are essential for good health.

Storage and use

Omega-3 fatty acids are very sensitive to oxidation. This is why omega DHA oils should be kept in the fridge after opening. Our flaxseed omega DHA oils are perfect as supplement for smoothies, salad dressings or muesli. Due to their heat sensitivity, the oils should not be heated nor be used for frying.
