DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) from Marine Micro-Algae

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a plant-based substitute for fish, seafood or fish oil capsules. Especially vegetarians, vegans and other people who only eat little fish need alternative DHA sources. Even though our body is able to produce small amounts of DHA from alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), it may not cover the daily requirements of DHA. The fatty acid ALA can be found in chia oil (63 g per 100 g), flaxseed oil (50 g per 100 g) or camelina oil (42 g per 100 g) among others.

Fish and seafood were long known for being the one ultimative source of DHA and omega-3 fatty acids in general. But microscopically small algae have turned out to be an adequate alternative: The cultivation is sustainable, ressource-friendly, non-polluting and, above all, onshore with no impact on the oceans and endagered fish populations. Apart from being eco-friendly, the green water plants have another "super power": They contain high amounts of the bioactive omega-3 fatty acid DHA, that is with its 6 double bonds, unrivalled among the omega-3 fatty acids.

Essential for vision, heart and brain functions

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) confirmed the following health claims regarding DHA and ALA:

  • ALA contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels (at minimum daily intake of 2 g ALA).
A diversified, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle are prerequisite.
  • DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal vision, brain and heart functions (at a minimum daily intake of 250 mg DHA).
A diversified, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle are prerequisite.

Freshly milled flaxseed oil with DHA

At Ölmühle Solling, we add precious DHA to our freshly milled flaxseed oil. It is rich in alpha-linolenic acid and therefore the perfect basis for our three delicious options flaxseed + walnut, flaxseed + chia and flaxseed + sea buckthorn. Walnut oil, chia oil and sea buckthorn oil all contain vitamin E which naturally slows down the oxidation of delicate polyunsaturated fatty acids. To ensure the high quality of our products, we put into a place internal and external quality control processes that are performed by state-recognised laboratories.

Tasty all-rounders

Be it fruit juices, smoothies, your breakfast muesli, algae dishes or salads - our omega DHA oils are true all-rounders and so tasty that you can also eat them by the spoonful. However, please make sure to store the oils in the fridge in order to protect the valuable omega-3 fatty acids from oxidation.
