Hemp seeds and hemp oil

Ölmühle Sollings Hemp Oil is cold-pressed from organically grown hemp seeds. The greenish oil has a mild, nutty taste and a very favourable ratio of omega-6 fatty acid (linoleic acid) and omega-3 fatty acid (alpha-linolenic acid) of 3:1.

The effects of hemp oil

In total, hempseed oil contains over 70g of unsaturated fatty acids per 100g. In addition to linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids, it contains around 3g per 100g of gamma-linolenic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid that is rare in edible oils. Virgin hemp oil, also known as hempseed oil, also contains other valuable phytonutrients such as carotenoids. It also contains vitamins such as tocopherols (vitamin E). The high levels of linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid have a positive effect on strengthening cell membranes. Hemp oil is also known as the 'queen of edible oils'. It has an ideal 3:1 balance of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids.

Origin and history

Hemp, with its distinctive leaves, is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world, originating in Central Asia and being cultivated in Europe soon after its discovery. The active ingredient tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) has made hemp famous as a narcotic but also as a medicinal plant.  Today, many varieties with low THC content are cultivated and used to produce valuable food products. In Europe in particular, there are many varieties that are virtually free of THC.

Hempseed oil in the kitchen

Hemp oil can be enjoyed straight from the spoon or used in dressings, dips and marinades. The green, nutty and tasty oil is also great in breakfast cereals and yoghurt with fruit. We do not recommend our hemp oil for frying, but only for steaming briefly to preserve the valuable essential fatty acids.

Tip: Try our Hemp Flour, made from gently de-oiled organic hemp seeds. It is great for baking and adding flavour to sauces, cereals and smoothies.

Hemp oil for skin and hair care

Hemp oil for the skinHemp oil cares for skin and hair

Our mild smelling hemp oil is also very popular as a skin and hair care oil. It can be used on its own as a rich moisturiser or mixed into your daily moisturiser for face and body. Dry, sensitive and mature skin in particular benefits from the moisturising and protective properties of cold-pressed hemp oil.

A hair treatment with hemp oil has a nourishing effect on the hair and scalp: Simply apply 1-2 teaspoons of the oil to towel-dried hair, depending on length, and leave on for a few hours. Wash out with a mild shampoo. Be careful with light blonde, white and grey hair: the greenish hemp oil may have a colouring effect due to its chlorophyll content.

More information about organic hemp oil

Hemp oil should always be stored in a tightly closed, cool place to protect its valuable ingredients. By the way: The pourer on our bottles not only makes it easier to measure out the oil, but also reduces the amount of oxygen the oil comes into contact with when you open it every day.

The high-quality, freshly cold-pressed oils from Ölmühle Solling are foods for a conscious and enjoyable diet.

Usage

By the spoonful, in salads, dips and sauces. Add to muesli and yoghurt and fry.

Botanical name: Cannabis sativa L.

Origin:
Botanical name: Cannabis sativa L. Origin: The cultivation of hemp has been allowed in Germany since the mid-1980s, but only with a cultivation permit. Only varieties with a very low THC (tetrahydrocannabiol) content are permitted for cultivation. Apart from Europe, hemp is also grown in Asia, Africa and North and South America. For oil extraction we prefer hemp seeds from German and European cultivation areas.

Properties: Hemp oil contains approximately 2-3% of the very rare and high quality gamma-linolenic acid. This essential fatty acid is involved in various metabolic processes and is therefore of particular importance. Alpha-linolenic acid helps maintain normal blood cholesterol levels. The positive effect is achieved with a daily intake of 2g of alpha-linolenic acid. A recommended portion of 16g of hemp oil (2 tablespoons of 8g) per day contains 2g of alpha-linolenic acid and covers 100% of the recommended intake of alpha-linolenic acid.
