What is the Recommended Dosage of Flaxseed Oil per Day?

Rich in omega-3 fatty acids

Leinöl Fettsäuren DiagrammOrganic flaxseed oil is a traditional and valued oil with a unique combination of fatty acids. It contains around 50 g of the essential omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid per 100 g. Next to its anti-inflammatory effects, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) helps maintaining a normal level of cholestorol in the blood. As essential fatty acid, ALA cannot be produced by the human body and must be obtained from the diet.

Recommended daily dosis

What is the recommended dosis of flaxseed oil per day? Around 10 g of flaxseed oil, i.e. 1-2 tablespoons, cover the daily requirement of omega-3 fatty acids of an adult. However, the individual recommended amount of flaxseed oil also depends on the food that we eat on a day-to-day basis. For vegetarians and vegans, adding flaxseed oil to their diet is a good way to ensure an adequate supply of omega-3 fatty acids, given that for most, meat and fish are the main sources of these essential fatty acids. But also nuts and seeds contain considerable amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, such as walnuts and chia seeds. Flaxseed oil can be combined with yogurt or curd, e.g. in your muesli for breakfast, or can be added to a salad. Thanks to its mild and nutty taste, it can even be eaten straight from the spoon. Especially in the Eastern part of Germany, flaxseed oil is a well-tried home remedy and - as topping for curd and potatoes in their skins - still an indispensable part of healthy, traditional home cooking.

Durability of flaxseed oil fresh from the mill

Due to its high proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids, our virgin, organic flaxseed oil is quite delicate. Oxygen, UV radiation and heat can have a negative impact on the oil. At Ölmühle Solling, we only process small batches of flaxseed everday, using gentle cold pressing only. After that, we add nitrogen for preservation and use UV-protected bottles as packaging. This way, the precious oil can be stored for around 2 months in the refrigerator. For longer durability, you can also freeze the flaxseed oil. Unlike water, oil does not expand when frozen and can therefore be kept in the original glass bottle. The frozen oil has a durability of up to 6 months.
