The evening primrose (Oenothera biennis) is a rather plain flower that often can be found on the wayside, natural slopes, screes and rail tracks. It most probably came to Europe as stowaway on merchant ships from North America. The seeds of the evening primrose are popular in naturopathy because of their high content of gamma-linolenic acid.
Evening primrose press cake as healthy horse fodder
Press cake is a by-product of the production process of evening primrose oil and is a high-quality fodder for horses. It is appreciated for its beneficial effects on the immune system. Our organic evening primrose oil for horses is obtained through cold-presssing of partly de-oiled evening primrose seeds. In this process, the temperatures remain below 40 °C which preserves the valuable ingredients particularly well.
The essential fatty acids in the evening primrose press cake can have beneficial effects on the skin elasticity and immune system of horses with feed-related deficiencies. Furthermore, regular consumption of the press cake can support the normal coat change.
Evening primrose press cake consists of around 20 % raw protein. Moreover, it still contains around 7 g evening primrose oil per 100 g which makes it an ideal feed supplement for picky eating horses. The oil in the press cake supplies the skin with gamma-linolenic acid and thereby soothes itchiness, irritations and dry skin.
Also suitable for dogs
Our evening primrose press cake can also be used as feed supplement or treat for dogs. Not every dog eats the pellets as treat. Therefore, we recommend to mix them with dry or wet food.
Caution: Black cumin oil and cake are toxic for cats because, unlike horses and dogs, they cannot break down bitter substances entirely.
Natural products for humans and animals
At Ölmühle Solling, we only use raw materials from organic farming and process them to high-quality natural products. We do not use artificial additives.
We recommend a daily feed of 50-100 g per pony or horse. The pellets can be given directly or as feed supplement and are also suitable as horse treat.
