Psyllium Husk is the seed husk of the Plantago indica plantain. The fruit of this plantain ripens into a capsule containing small brown seeds. These resemble fleas, hence the plant's German name 'Flohkraut' or 'Flohsamen-Wegerich'. The Latin translation of Plantago psyllium is 'flea'. The small seeds are also known as Indian Psyllium Husk and are grown mainly in India as a food and remedy.
Rich in fibre and mucilage
Ground psyllium husks are particularly rich in fibre and mucilage. Fibres are indigestible food components that fulfil many important functions in the body. They stay in the stomach longer, keeping you fuller for longer. They act as natural bulking agents and are therefore often used in naturopathy as a natural support for the digestive organs by stimulating bowel activity. In order to be able to swell, it is always important to drink plenty of fluids.
Ground psyllium husks should not be confused with psyllium seeds. Because the ground seeds have a flour-like appearance, they are also known as psyllium flour. Our psyllium husks are actually just the outer shell of the psyllium seed. The protein- and fat-rich core has been removed. This greatly increases the ability to swell and concentrates the valuable mucilaginous polysaccharide layer.
