Our organic raw camelina oil is prized for its high levels of omega-3 fatty acids (around 40g per 100g). It is cold-pressed from freshly harvested camelina seeds and has a vegetable flavour reminiscent of peas or asparagus. Our camelina oil is vegan, lactose-free and gluten-free.
True or false? The difference between true and false flax
Camelina, also known as false or wild flax, should not be confused with flax. While flax belongs to the Linaceae family, camelina belongs to the Brassicaceae family, like rapeseed and mustard. As a result, the oils from the two plants taste different: While flaxseed oil has a mild, nutty flavour, camelina oil has a vegetable-like taste reminiscent of peas.
Linseed
Camelina flower
Flaxseed oil and camelina oil are very similar in terms of their fatty acid spectrum. They both contain high levels of the polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid. Flaxseed oil contains 50g of this essential fatty acid per 100g compared to 40g in camelina oil, but the shelf life of the two vegetable oils is very different. While virgin flaxseed oil has a shelf life of only 8 weeks from cold pressing, camelina oil has a shelf life of around 9 months
Origin and history
Camelina has been cultivated since the Neolithic period and was used for oil production by the Celts. Since then it has been used in naturopathy. In recent years, camelina oil has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity and is valued for its high levels of essential fatty acids, both for cooking and skin care.
Freshly milled camelina oil
Our camelina oil is freshly pressed every week and bottled within 24 hours in UV-protected bottles. Once opened, the oil is protected from oxygen by the handy oil dispenser we attach to each bottle. Once opened, keep the oil in the fridge.
Camelina oil for cooking
With its fresh, pea-like flavour, camelina oil is great with all kinds of vegetables. It is ideal for salads and steamed vegetables. Similar to flaxseed oil, it enhances potatoes in their skins with quark. Because of its high omega-3 content, we recommend that you do not heat the oil, but use it at moderate temperatures for steaming.
Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) belongs to the group of omega-3 fatty acids. ALA contributes to normal blood cholesterol levels. A daily intake of 2g of ALA is recommended, which is equivalent to 1 tablespoon of 5g camelina oil. Enjoy our product as part of a varied and balanced diet.
Camelina oil for skin care
Because of its mild scent, camelina oil is also popular as a skin care oil. You can apply it directly to the skin as a rich treatment, or add it to your daily skin care products for face and body.
Usage
Camelia oil is very rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and is therefore recommended for cooking at low to moderate temperatures. It enhances salad dressings, dips, cottage cheese and yoghurt. It can also be used for skin care. Its high omega-3 content and mild fragrance make it an ideal skin care oil that can be applied directly to the skin or combined with other oils or creams.
